Beavers Secure 14th Consecutive Big 8 Conference Title With 5-4 Victory Over Modesto

The Beavers hopes for a 14th consecutive conference title came down to the last match against the Modesto Junior College Pirates. With the dual match tied at 4-4, Jesus Galvan battled against MJC #2, Jack Conte, in a third set with the conference title on the line. After being down 3-1 in the deciding set, Galvan fought back with incredible toughness and tenacity to run off five straight games and close the match out 6-3 in the third. Both players gave absolutely everything they had, with Conte crumbling to the ground with full-leg cramps and Galvan hurrying to the garbage can to throw up after the final point. It was one of the first hot days of the spring, and the match came down to a battle of attrition. Other highlights of the match included Landon Arendt and Tijme Brunner winning a hard-fought match at #1 doubles by the score of 8-6, Arendt dominating at #1 singles 6-2, 6-0, Golen cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #3 singles, and Thomas Nosler winning a one-sided match at #6 singles by the score of 6-3, 6-0. Of all the recent conference championships the Beavers have won, this was by far the closest championship match, and because of the tremendous challenge the Pirates presented, it was the most elation the team has felt after earning the title. The Beavers will next compete against UC Santa Cruz on Tuesday, 3/23 against the NCAA DIII powerhouse Banana Slugs.
