Steve Corpening is to this day one of the most decorated high school soccer players to come out of the Sacramento area, and surely one of the best to ever don an ARC uniform. He graduated from Dixon High School in 1983, having played soccer and basketball. He was the league MVP in 1982, All-Metro in 1981 and 82, and a US Army All-American in 1983. He had 70 career varsity goals and 56 assists. Those numbers got him inducted into the Dixon High School Hall of Fame in 2017.
At American River Steve continued dominating on the pitch, as he was named 1st team All-Camino Norte Conference in 1983 and 84. He was also voted All-Far West both years and All-American in 1984 while playing for Ralph Orey and Dean Wurzberger. Steve scored 28 career goals to go along with 20 assists while playing for the Beavers, which led to him being named the Camino Norte Conference Athlete of the Year in 1985 and the Sacramento Athletic Hall of Fame Athlete of the Year as well.
Steve went on to have a stellar career at Sac State where he was All-Far West and All-American in 1987. He was inducted into Sac State’s Hall of Fame in 2002. Steve had the honor of playing for the United States West Regional Team in 1987 and the US National “B” Team in 1988. He played for several professional soccer teams as well, including FC Sacramento, the Edmonton Brickmen, and the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks. While with the Blackhawks he was a two-time APSL All-Star and led the league in scoring in 1989. Steve also led the Sacramento Knights Indoor team to a CISL Championship in 1995.
Since his professional playing days ended in 1996 Steve has worked as a Procurement Specialist for Broadridge Financial for the past 28 years. Steve is married to his wife Maya and they live in Roseville. Steve has a daughter Maya and a step-son Joe.
